The Diploma in Theology offered at Kanana Fou is somewhat unique. This uniqueness is evident in the amount of course work that is required. Compared to other standards, the Diploma in Theology at Kanana Fou exceeds the academic load normally expected of an undergraduate theological degree. However, this is the reason why the program was designed in the first place. The course load, lofty as it may be, is necessary to meet all academic and pastoral standards required for ordination in the Congregational Christian Church in American Samoa (CCCAS).
The Diploma in Theology seeks to accomplish the following purposes:
*
to cultivate competent skills in the study and interpretation of Scripture;
*
to develop a grasp of theology and fashion a systematic framework informing both the ethics of personal and social behavior and the practice of ministry in the Samoan/Pacific context;
*
to value the origin and growth of the Christian tradition and appreciate its richness and diversity;
*
to promote growth in Christian maturity and ministry in the Samoan/Pacific church and the world.
The diploma offers an opportunity to undertake 4 years of theological study necessary for pastoral ordination in the CCCAS and for ministry in other Pacific island churches where the diploma is recognized. The diploma requires the completion of 44 courses (papers); the equivalent of 132 semester units at 3 units per course. The format of the diploma is as follows:
